First of all Zottegem is a very exciting town, with a busy shopping- and service-centre; for a long time past it has always held a central function for the surrounding villages. The tuesday market goes back hundreds of years : a sculpture of the "market lion" in the front of the town hall refers to this fact. And during the first week-end of July there is a street-fair and all the shops sell their goods outside in the streets.
If you are looking for regional cooking or a gastronomical dinner you have come to the right place. Zottegem can be proud of several excellent restaurants and plenty of pubs and cafés. The local beers are highly recommended : Oude Zottegemse, Egmont and Grand Cru are still brewed like in the old days. Some of the local biscuits and cakes are sold during all seasons, but a few others are only baked from Saint Nicholas" Day till Twelfth-night.
At the sports and recreation area of the Bevegemse Vijvers you can have a swim, catch some sun, play a game of tennis, and so much more.
An exciting town likes to keep its folk traditions alive and that is exactly what Zottegem does during the Twelfth-night period when people go from door to door singing carols and several carnivals pass through the crowded streets. Every year a bonfire is made to burn the cities" Christmas-tree and in spring there are the marvellous cavalcades. On Whit Sunday there is a giant pageant, during the first week of July a Cultural Week is organized with all local cultural organisations participating and in August you are welcome on the exciting Summer Festival with the traditional Tistaertprijs for professional cyclists.
